Downtown Downey Guide: Night Market, Farmers Market, and Where to Eat
Buyers ask me all the time what it's actually like to live in Downey day to day, beyond the schools and the market data. Downtown Downey is a big part of that answer.
The Night Market
Held every second and fourth Thursday of the month, the Downtown Downey night market brings out local food vendors, drinks, and entertainment in a walkable, pedestrian-friendly stretch of the city. It's become one of the go-to reasons people who live nearby actually use their downtown instead of driving somewhere else on a Thursday night.
The Farmers Market
Every Saturday from 9am to 1pm, local farmers and vendors set up with fresh produce and goods. If a walkable Saturday morning market is part of your ideal weekend, this is one more reason downtown-adjacent neighborhoods carry a little extra appeal.
Where to eat
Downtown Downey has built a real food scene over the last several years. You've got classic spots like Bob's Big Boy for the nostalgia crowd, strong Mexican food options for authentic Molcajetes and tacos, and Mediterranean options near the theater district for something different. And yes, Porto's Bakery, which at this point is basically a Downey landmark in its own right.
Why this matters for buyers
A lot of buyers focus entirely on the house and forget to ask what their actual life looks like once they move in. If a walkable downtown with regular events and solid food options matters to you, that should factor into which part of Downey you target, not just which house has the right number of bedrooms.
